please evaluate my argument essay "Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news program have canceled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to our news programs and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should expand our coverage of weather and local news on all our news programs."
Over the past year, since late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and devoted less time to weather and local news. Local businesses which used to advertise cancelled their contracts and also received complaints from viewers. So author concludes by saying that if restore the time devoted to weather and local news to its former level, then we can attract more viewers to the program. however author does not have valid points to support his conclusion.
First flaw in the argument is, assuming that since news channel is devoting less time to local and weather news, people have started complaining and cancelling their advertisement contracts. Actually people will be more interested in national news than local news because it is easier for them to know what is happening in near by places. so generally people listen to news, so that they come to know what is actually happening in different regions of their country. Hence author assumition is wrong.
Second major flaw, author has made here is, he has said that viewers were concerned with station's coverage of weather and local news. He should have been more specific in explaining this problem. Whether the news contents is not proper or the person who is presenting it, lacks skills to attract the audience. He has also failed to mention whether people who will present the news or person who prepares the news script has been changed. Becasue new person who had been appointed may not be skillful which may be the actual concern for the news channel.
Another flaw in this argument is, author has said that if they restore the devoted time for local and weather news to its former level then everything will be fine. This is not valid because without knowing what the actual concern is and stating a conclusion for it is wrong. Author should first find what is actually causing this problem and he has also failed to mention about the competition in the field. Even if their competitors have started attracting people, then it may also be the reason for the downfall of this news channel.
Summing it up, Author should have conducted some survey and based on results of survey. He could have Proved that actual problem is only because of the time limit in local and weather news but here he has assumed many things which may or may not be true.
