Twenty years ago, Dr. Field, a noted anthropologist, visited the island of Tertia. Using an observation-centered approach to studying Tertian culture, he concluded from his observations that children in Tertia were reared by an entire village rather than by their own biological parents. Recently another anthropologist, Dr. Karp, visited the group of islands that includes Tertia and used the interview-centered method to study child-rearing practices. In the interviews that Dr. Karp conducted with children living in this group of islands, the children spent much more time talking about their biological parents than about other adults in the village. Dr. Karp decided that Dr. Field's conclusion about Tertian village culture must be invalid. Some anthropologists recommend that to obtain accurate information on Tertian child-rearing practices, future research on the subject should be conducted via the interview-centered method.
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
In the passage author has presented the conclusion made by two anthropologists Dr. Field and Dr. Karp about the child-rearing practices of island of Tertia. The author has also stated the views of other anthropologists and their recommendations to obtain accurate information on Tertian child-rearing practices using interview-centered method.
Dr. Field has used an observation-centered approach and he concluded that children in Tertia were reared by an entire village rather than by their own biological parents where as Dr. Karp has used interview centered approach and his conclusion completely contradicts from the previous one. Here details of both approaches would have been presented to identify the significance of their observation and conclusion. There is a possibility that these methods have their own constraints where they should be applied.
For example interview-centered approach may be more useful where number of educated people are more or ratio of adults are more who can give proper answers to the queries. So questions like population of Tertia, ratio of adults to children, number of educated people should be answered to provide strong support to the views of both the anthropologists.
Further Dr. Karp has decided that Dr. Field's conclusion is invalid. Here the idea and thoughts behind his decision is not described. The domain of the observation of both the anthropologists is also not same, Dr. Field has taken his observation only in a single village in island of Tertia, whereas Dr. Karp has conducted his investigation in group of islands. So it is a possibility that Dr. Karp has given the generalized conclusion of Tertian child-rearing practices.
At the end author has presented the views of some anthropologists, who suggested the interview-centered method to obtain accurate information on Tertian child-rearing practices. Why these anthropologists are emphasizing to use the interview-centered method, what are the advantages of this method, on which conditions it should be applied, whether it is appropriate to use this method in Tertia should be mentioned to make strong conclusion. So the reason and details behind the various conclusions made in the passage should be given in order to make it completely informative.
