In the upcoming years, development and widespread use of transportation have brought about traffic accidents which were mostly caused by irresponsible people. It is recently debated that applying strict penalties for those people is an effective method to reduce these traffic accidents and make our roads safer. From my perspective, both strict punishments for drivers and other methods should be implemented to improve road safety.
On the one hand, strict punishments can make a contribution to encouraging people to drive safely and not break traffic laws. When being fined heavily, those who are dangerous drivers can be aware of the level of risk caused by themselves. Therefore, they can feel regretful and alter, which is responsible for a safer road. Specifically, in Viet Nam, drunk driving has been seen as a serious issue while participating in the road. Those who do not allow rules and intentionally drive cars after drinking alcohol can be fined heavily from 6 million VNĐ to 60 million VND or even have their license suspended. This contributes to their awareness becoming better and encouraging them not to repeat again.
On the other hand, strict penalties combined with other methods should be implemented effectively to reduce the number of accidents in countries. To begin with, driving schools and governments should educate citizens strictly and ask them to participate in difficult driving tests before providing them licenses and letting them join in traffic. Furthermore, local councils and governments should pay an amount of money in investing in public transportation systems. This plays an integral part in decreasing accidents in the future.
In conclusion, while strict penalties can play an important part to deter people from driving offences, other measures such as raising people’s awareness or investing in public transportation systems would be implemented effectively.
