The line chart depicts how three different criminal behaviours changed during a decade, from 2003 to 2012 in Newport city. Each line represents a specific crime: burglary, car theft and robbery from the person.
Firstly, it can be clearly seen that burglary showed a downward trend from 2004 to 2008. In 2004 it reached its peak, from approximately 3400 incidents per year in 2003 to 3800 in 2004. Over the following 4-year period, a very sharp decline was described, reaching its minimum at around 1100 in 2008. Afterwards, its line described a steady situation just under 1500 crimes yearly.
Secondly, we can observe how the car theft crime had a plateau in the first three years, around 2800 incidents each. In 2006 this crime showed its lowest value at 2000 incidents, and by the following years it slightly fluctuated until it reached a value just under the 2003 starting point.
Thirdly, we can notice that robbery has always been the less common crime. In fact, its range was always between 850 crimes in 2005 and 500 in 2008, even though in the 10-year period taken under consideration, it slightly fluctuated.
Overall, we can see that burglary was the most common crime in the first 4.5 years, and then there was a shift with the car theft, which overcame the former from the second semester of 2006 onwards.
