In 1990, Portugal ranked first in the investment amount spent on transportation at over 25%, followed by Italia with 22%. These figures doubled those of Great Britain and The United States whose statistics remained around 10% each. In the next 5 years, a slight fall was witnessed in the figures of all countries with the largest reduction belonging to Portugal.
By the end of the 20th century, nearly 23% of budget was spent on roads and traffic in Italy and Portugal, whereas in the UK and the US, the amounts of spending allocated for this sector were more than 10% lower. By 2005, except for America, all other three nations reduced the spending used for transportation to 18%, 20% and 7% respectively. Despite a steady growth in budget, the United States only ranked third in figures at 15%.
