The graph illustrates global oil production by the ratio of oil barrels per day in OPEC and Non-OPEC countries. Three periods are considered: 1980-2000, 2000-2010, 2010-2020 (forecast). The overall production increased of about one-half from the first to the second period, then slightly decreased from 2010 on.
At a first glance, the share of oil produced by OPEC Middle East countries experienced a steep growht, going from about 2 million barrels in the first period to over 15 million in the 2010-2020 span and thus accounting for over 80% of the total (estimated around 17 million barrels). This trend negatively correlates with that of Non-OPEC countries’ production, which constituted the biggest share in the first period and was dramatically reduced by nearly 4/5 in the last interval of time considered.
Finally, Non-Middle East OPEC countries, whose production was irrelevant in the 80s, gained momentum between 2000 and 2010, with a share comparable to that of Non-OPEC countries at the same time. Albeit seeing their production sharply reduced in the following years, it is predicted that they will maintain the same ratio with Non-OPEC countries.
