The charts below show reasons for travel and the main issues for the travelling public in the US in 2009.

The bar chart and the pie chart illustrate the reason why US residents travelled and what travel problems they tackled in the year 2009.
Overall, it can be seen from the charts that people in the US mainly travelled to commute to and from work in 2009 whereas in the same year, the primary concern of Americans about the journeys they made, was the cost of travelling.
According to the bar chart, 49% of the trips made by Americans in 2009 were for commuting. By contrast, only 6% of the trips were visits to friends or relatives and one in ten trips were for social or recreation purpose. Besides, the percentage of personal reasons in that year was more than 3% of shopping purpose, the ration is 19% compared to 16%.
Looking more closely at the pie chart, prices was the key consideration for 36% of American travellers. Approximately one in five US residents cited safety as their foremost travel concern, while aggressive driving and traffic jam were the main issues for 17% and 14% of the travelling public. Finally, 6% and 8% of the Americans for the first concern about travelling, were access to public transport and space for pedestrians, respectively.
