The pictures illustrate the silkworm’s cycle of life and the process by which silk cloth is produced.
Overall, it is clear that whereas the life cycle of the silkworm consists of four stages, the production of silk cloth is made up of 5 or 6 steps.
Regarding the silkworm’s life cycle, after a moth has laid its eggs, a period of ten days should pass until the silkworm larva is created. Next, this larva eats mulberry leaves for about 4-6 weeks in order to make silk threads. Then, these threads turn into a cocoon, which usually takes 3-8 days. The process ends after approximately 16 days when the cocoon becomes a moth.
To produce a silk cloth, firstly, cocoons are selected and boiled in water. Following this, they are unwound, by which threads are created of approximately 300-900 meters long. Having done that, the threads could be died if needed, after which they are twisted and then, finally, weaved.
