Overall, during this period, the quantities of merchandises transported by road, water and pipeline experienced an upward trend while the amount of goods transported by rail remained unchanged.
During this long period from 1974 to 2002, the quantities of goods transported by road was always the largest number. In 1975, there were around 70 million tonnes of good transported by road and this number remained stable until 1990s when it witnessed a long period of upward trend in this number from 1990 to 2002. Similar to road, the amount of goods transported by water rose significantly from 1974 to 1982. Afterward, this number remained unchanged during a long period between 1982 and 1998 before it started to grow again from 1998 to 2002. A strong upward trend could be found in the amount of goods that was transported by pipeline between 1974 and 1982. After that, this figure remained stable for a long period from 1982 to 2002.
By contrast, the quantities of merchandises transported by train witnessed a downward trend from 40 million tonnes in 1974 to around 30 million tonnes in 1986. This figure was stable between 1986 and 1990 before it started to show an upward trend from 1994. In 2002, the amount of goods transported by train came back to where it started with 40 million tonnes per year.
