The line chart illustrates the amount of commodities transported by four kinds of transport in UK from 1974 to 2002.
It is apparent that the largest quantity of goods was transported by road throughout the period, with around 70 million tonnes of goods were transported in 1974, rising to 100 million tonnes in 2002. By strike contrast, transporting goods by pipeline was the most insignificant in 1974, only 5 million tonnes of goods were transported by pipeline. Nevertheless, transporting goods by pipeline become more popular after 1978, quantity of goods transported was increased steadily until 1994, and remaining stable at 22 million tonnes from 1995 to 2002.
The amount of goods conveyed by rail were similar in 1974 and 2002, with around 40 million tonnes of goods conveyed. It was important to note that, the amount of goods conveyed through rail decreased gradually until 1994, and increased back to the level of 1974 in 2002. With regard to the goods transported by water, it was clear that the amounts of good transported from 1982 to 1994 were relatively stable at the level of around 60 million tonnes.
Overall, the transportation of goods in UK is mainly relied on the road. While the quantity of goods transported by pipeline had a considerable increase over the period, pipeline was still the least popular method of transport.
