The bar graph illustrates the changes in the age of the population of Iceland from 1990 to 2020.
Generally, there are two basic general trends: downward and upward. As regards the first, the percentages for people aged between 15 and 24 and children under 14 were down over the period, falling noticeably from 21% to 9% and 25% to 19% respectively. Additionally, 55-64 inhabitants decreased slightly by 3%, too.
By contrast, the proportion for 25-54 people and the elderly went up by varying degrees. There was a gradual growth in the share of people from 25 to 54 years old from over 30% in 1990 to under 40% in 2010, followed by a sharp climb to a final 50%. Furthermore, accounting for 12% in 1990, the index for people over 65 did not experience considerable changes, but ended the period up with 13% in 2020.
Overall, the Icelandic population for people over 25 increased significantly, while the indexes for children and young adults reduced.
