The table below give information about changes in modes of travel in England between 1985 and 2000

The table reveals the average distance measured in miles which each person traveled in England by various transport means during a 16-year period from 1985 to 2000. Overall, car was by far the most used vehicle and the number of miles travelled by all modes witnessed a remarkable increase during the time surveyed.

Regarding the figure for all modes, the average miles rose significantly by over 1,700 miles, from 4,740 miles in 1985 to 6,475 miles in 2000. The figure for car stayed well beyond the others, at 3,199 miles in 1985 then increasing by over 1,000 from 3,199 miles to 4,806 miles. This was followed by that for long-distance bus, train and other, experiencing an unremarkable rise over the period. The distance traveled by taxi was significantly threefold its initial value, 42 miles in the last year compared with 13 miles in the first year.

There was a downward trend in terms of the remaining vehicles. It can be seen that bicycles were the least used modes of travel after 15 years. The average miles people walking slightly decrease, 255 miles in 1985 as opposed 247 miles in 2000 respectively. Meanwhile, that of local bus dropped roughly twofold from 429 miles in the first year to 274 in the last year.
