The table gives information about the underground systems in six major cities around the world in three categories, opening date, total length in km, and total number of passengers (in millions). Overall, London has the oldest and the longest metro network.
London underground was built in 1863, which is roughly 40 years before Paris underground. This was followed by Tokyo 1927, Washington DC 1976 and Kyoto 1981. Strikingly, Los Angeles met with underground almost 140 years later than London, in 2001.
Coming up to total length, London was again the in the leading position with 394 km. This was more than the sum of Paris and Tokyo, which were 199km for the former and 155 km for the latter one. Washington DC had a total route of 126 kilometers, although it was started to build quite later than the first three. Strikingly Kyoto and Los Angeles had only 11km and 28 km of underground respectively.
If we look at the passenger volume, Tokyo was the first one, with 1.9 billion people annually. This was followed by Paris with 1.1 billion and 775 million for London respectively. 144 million people travelled with underground in Washington DC. Finally roughly 50 million people used subway in Kyoto and Los Angeles.
