Many parents and teachers sometimes turn to severe punishments when a child deviates off the right path. The given prompt implies that such punishment can effectively instill a sense of right and wrong in children from an early age. However, I do not agree with this statement, primarily due to one reason which I will elaborate on in this essay. Furthermore, I will explore an alternative method of teaching children the distinction between good and bad.
Enforcing strict Punishment and imposing restraints on a child without explaining the differences between right and wrong will not help them comprehend the repercussions of their actions or errors. As he will not be aware of why a certain activity is wrong or why he was punished for it, he will only become frustrated for such punishments or restrictions. Eventually, when the child grows up to be an independent person, they might perceive themselves as liberated to make decisions that were once restricted by their parents and teachers, oblivious to the potential consequences.
Instead of admonishing children without any direction, if adults teach them to take responsibilities of their own actions, it will prove to be more effective in learning good behavior and avoiding recurrent mistakes. For instance, if a child impulsively breaks a vase in the fit of anger, instead of scolding him , focus should be given on making him understand the value of the vase. If parents assign him with chores, till he makes up the cost of the vase, the child will better understand the worth of the vase and how hard work went behind buying the vase. Consequently, the child becomes more attuned to the idea that destructive actions driven by anger yield no positive outcomes.
To conclude, punishing and rebuking children aimlessly for their mistakes will not teach them to distinguish between right and wrong. Rather, explaining to them why a certain behavior is considered wrong will effectively teach them about good behavior.
