The teaching style of a class would influence students' way of learning. Some classes spend much time to hold discussions among instructors and students, and some prefer passing the knowledge in series of lectures. In my opinion, I believe the prior one is preferable, and there are two reasons in the following paragraphs.
To begin with, learning in a discussion can help learners learn about the diversity of an issue. Different from lectures, in a discussion, people can acquire different perspectives from others then realize the entire picture of things. For example, in the mental health courses which I took before, the teacher held discussions every week and encouraged us to share our opinions and experiences about different mental diseases. In the class, I corrected many misunderstandings and wrong impressions of mental disorder patients because some classmates have ever suffered from the disease. After listening to their stories, I realized the challenges and depression the patients and their families would meet. However, these complex situations are entirely beyond the descriptions on the textbooks. The experience demonstrates that learning by discussing and exchanging opinions with others can realize more aspects of an issue.
Secondly, communication is a critical skill for students, and discussion-based class offers the opportunities to practice raising ideas and listening to others. In my experience in a learning workshop, we would conduct several debates on some environmental problems in the world. In the process to give my own opinions, the members with opposite opinions often raised the questions and challenged my statement. To successfully persuade others to take my perspectives, I tried various methods to make my utterances more organized and logical and learn how to collect the evidence to strengthen my statements. Moreover, I also became a more open-minded person to respect different ideas then learn the new thoughts from them. Without joining this workshop, I would not have the chance to practice my communication skills.
In conclusion, I prefer the teaching style- learning in a discussion more than the class where involves lectures mostly. Because in a discussion, students can learn things in a diverse environment and cultivate their communication skill as well.
