In 1938 an archaeologist in Iraq acquired a set of clay jars that had been excavated two years earlier by villagers constructing a railroad line The vessel was about 2 200 years old Each clay jay contained a copper cylinder surrounding an iron rod The

The reading piece and the lecture are regarding the usage of vessels found in Iraq. According to the author of the reading, the vessels certainly could not have been used for generating electricity whereas the lecturer hold antithetical opinion. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points made in the reading.

Preeminently, according to the reading, the vessel was not used for generating electricity as there were no metal wires which would have been used as conductors. However, the lecturer refutes this point. The lecturer points out that the vessels were found by local people who are not trained archaeologist, they might not have been able to recognize the material. In addition, she elucidates that there is a possibility that the wires were just overlooked or thrown away as they could have been considered not so interesting.

By the same token, the reading states that the cylinder found inside the vessel were very similar to that of cylinder which were found in Seleucia. Furthermore, the author asserts that they might be of the same use that is to hold scrolls. Nevertheless, the lecturer disputes this point. The lecturer affirms that this might have been the initial use of the vessels but might have changed over a period of time. The lecturer suggests that there might have been discovery that iron rod along with some liquid in the vessel could produce electricity which could also mark the initial production of electricity in ancient times.

In winding up, the reading contends that there was no use of electricity. There were no appliances that operated on electricity hence, the discovery would be of little importance. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that they could have used it to produce mild shock or produce tingling sensation. Ancient people were fond of magic and could boost that they had invisible powers. Mild shocks could also have been used for healing purpose as it is used in today's modern science.
