Both the reading passage and lecture discuss about methods for saving Torreya taxifolia. The former argues three ways for protecting the tree. But the latter contradicts each of these points.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that reestablishing the tree in the same place can be a good solution. However, the lecturer contends that these cool areas affected by climate changes. Because of global warming, wet lands dried. Thus, the plant is unlikely to survive in the original climate.
Second of all, text asserts that moving the tree to completely new areas can help to preserve that. In contrast, the speaker counters that with giving an example. She asserts that the Black locust tree moved in a similar way. Then, it spread quickly and killed other plants which were near to extinct in that area.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that keeping the tree in research centers can prevent extinction. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point and states that it is not a good solution. In order to resist to diseases, a population should be large and diverse. Nonetheless, the research centers do not have enough capacity for the population. Hence, the trees will be vulnerable to the diseases.
To sum up, it is clear that both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about ways for saving the three.
