According to the reading passage, it is stated that a silver coin found in North America was placed there recently to mislead the public, and it is a significant evidence of a historical fake. The author developed three reasons to support the idea. However, in the listening part, the professor explains why the assumptions mentioned in the reading part were incorrect and refutes them by describing three reasons as follows.
First, the reading passage claims that since the place where the coin found is so far from its original location, it is mainly imposible to link a connection between the current location and the silver coin. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on this point by describing that native americans were intrested in traveling, and they had traveled far distances. Moreover, they were obssessed with bringing back different objects to there own lands. Accordingly, the reason that far distance contradicts the connection between coin and North America is not acceptable.
Secondly, the reading passage posits that no other coins have been discovered in that canadian sites. In contrast, the lecturar states that Norse people usually did not have a permenant settlement in American site, and whenever they wanted to go back, they packed all of their possessions. In this regard, silver coins were one of the objects that they packed up and took them back to their palce of residence. Thats why there is no other clues of silver coins in Maine region.
Finally, the reading says that native Americans did not recognize silver coins as money, and those coins were useless and redundant objects in North America. The professor opposes this by explaining that although aboriginal people in North America did not value silver coins as money, but the atractive and unusual things worthed them so much. They were transforming those coines to some appealing things like neckless or jwellary. Thus, Eroupian people could have used those coins in trading with Americans.
