4-day workweek
The Article is about transition of many companies from 5-day workweek to 4-day workweek plan in USA. The author points out about various benefits from this change, while professor opposes these points by mentioning about his own views. Working hours plays important role for those children who’s upbringing is with both the employed parents.
Firstly, author states that money spent on gas and fuel will reduce as one day is reduced. Professor refuses this point stating that there will not be tremendous benefit on this point. He explains with an arithmetic calculation of average miles covered and money used in gasoline. Approximately employee needs to travel for 30 miles which would use 15 to 20 dollars of gas a week and if one day is omitted then yearly 850 dollars will be saved. So, there will be some benefit but it won’t be extraordinary.
Secondly, author writes about cutting cost and saving money due to reduction in operating costs of business. Also working efficiency will be improved due to 3 days of weekend. Professor claims negatively by mentioning about 20% loss in business due to one day less in working of business and also states that in 4 days business will be open for late evening hours but consumers will be in hurry for returning home and so no one would visit business place. Hence, evening working hours will be less beneficial than the whole day of 5-day workweek.
Thirdly, author posits that employee will get more time with family. Professor casts doubt on this by making point of children and need of putting them in day care which stays open in late evening. He also adds up telling that during that extra one day off children would be attending their schools in morning half of the day, so parents will not get time to spend with them. So, professor puts forward strong points in oppose of writer for mentioned benefits of 4-day workweek.
