The reading and the passage are both about the ways to discipline a child. The author of the reading states three categories used for disciplining children. The lecturer cast doubt on all the three points. The lecturer states that discipline is directly related to self esteem. The lecturer contrast all the three points made in the reading.
First of all, the reading states that power is the one of the method to achieve discipline. It includes two things punishing the child by hitting him/her or by threatening him/her to take away things which he/she likes or loves to do. The reading says that discipline using the power is proved to be most effective strategy. However, the lecturer disputes with this point, he says that power method used in child is proved to have low self esteem. Hence power strategy develops child with low self esteem.
Secondly, the author of the reading states that second method to discipline a child is the withholding the affection, or not treating or keeping the child deprived of love, care and affection. The lecturer refutes with this point. He says that children treated with this kind of discipline develops low self esteem. The lecturer says that the power and withholding affection method should be used with caution.
Finally, the last method of discipline provided in the reading is management. This technique uses set of rules that are implemented at appropriate age level. The lecturer says that this techniques develops child with high self esteem. This method disciplines child with affection, approval and attention. When a child does right things he/she should be appreciated and parents should use this as a positive way to implement discipline in them.
In conclusion, summing up all the three methods, the main points of the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
