Altruism
The reading and the lecture both about Altruism. The author of the reading feels that Altruism means animals sacrifice their interests for other animals and this kind of behavior is found in many animals. The lecturer challenges the claims made by author. She is of the opinion that no one is altruist.
To begin with, the author gives an example of humans. He says that human shares food with strangers and donate body organs. Such an act is an example of altruism. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She points out that when human donates a kidney to other people, he gets appreciation from society as well as a feeling of self-worthiness. Human gets this kind of nonmaterial rewards. So this is not altruism.
Secondly, the author gives an example of a meerkat animal. He posits that meerkat sacrifices his own food for other members and stands guard looking for predator. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the close examination reveals that the guard who stands to look for predators always with full stomach. She elaborates this point by bringing up the point that guard is most likely to escape faster than other members of animals.
