Altruism and altruism acts....
The passage discusses about altruism in which an animals and human sacrifices their interests for other another beings. It gives a description of altruism as an opposite of selfishness. However, the professor talks about the same topic with a different perspective that from the passage.
First, the passage provides an example of Meerkat, a mammal, which sacrifices itself for the sake of the whole group. In fact, while all the other meerkats are engaged in feeding, he is the one that guards and informs in case of any predator. However, the professor suggests that the guard meerkat is the one that generally eat the food ahead from that of the herd or group and has the least threat from the predators like hawk as he us always close to the borrow.
Secondly, the passage suggests that meerkat have to warn the others by making various sounds that makes it vulnerable to predator. On the other hand, the professor argues that such activities would rather protect the guard meerkat from potential danger as it creates an alarming effect on the hawk.
Finally, the passage suggests that human beings have shown immense altruism by various unselfish acts like donation or organs to family members, and even to strangers. Such acts are done without any rewards or incentives. However, the professor argues that such acts also have its own personal incentives, especially non-materialistic ones. Moreover, the donor always has a strong feeling of self-worth and dignity in the society due to his deeds. In other words, people and animals can perform various activities that seem to be altruistic but rather has some hidden incentives in it.
