Amtrak is an intercity train service currently owned by the United States government. There are a number of critics who believe that the government should not own Amtrak and that Amtrak should be sold to a privately-owned company. These critics put forward several arguments to support their position.
First, the critics point out that the government loses money on many Amtrak routes. In its effort to serve citizens in all parts of the country, Amtrak maintains routes even in remote and less populated areas. Those routes are not used by enough passengers to cover the cost of maintaining them. The amount of money lost every year due to underuse is sizeable: the government loses up to several hundred dollars per passenger on some routes: and the total losses due to underuse add up to hundreds of millions of dollars every year If Amtrak was privatized, these unprofitable routes could be cut.
Second, government ownership of Amtrak is unfair to privately owned transportation companies such as airlines Government fundi ng of Amtrak means that ticket prices on Amtrak are cheaper than they otherwise would be. However, the government does not give airline companies money so they can lower their ticket prices. This situation clearly is unfair to airlines and other private transportation companies because they must compete against trains for customers.
Third, critics maintain that if the government wants to support national transportation, it should spend its money elsewhere Rail travel is relatively unimportant in the United States: Amtrak currently transports less than 1 percent of the people traveling between cities. A large majority of intercity travelers use other means of transport, such as private cars. The critics argue that rather than finance Amtrak, the government should direct its funding at maintaining and improving the highway system so that intercity car travel becomes faster and more efficient.
Amtrack is a train service owned by the government of United States. the passage introduces three reasons critics have mentioned for the government to sell this railtrack to private organizations. The lecturer opposes these reasons using different points.
First, the critics point out that due to the fact that Amtraks maintain routs to remote areas and has less than satisfactory amount of travelers for such stations, the government is losing money. by privatizing the service these routs can be cut so the losses are lessened. However, the lecturer argues against this saying that this service was established to offer transportation to all citizens of the United States and not to only the people from crowded areas. afterall citizens of remote areas have the same rights as citizens living in populated areas.
The article points that the government ownership of the train services is unfair because other private companies need to compete with the government with it's cheaper tickets, while airline companies can't sell their tickets for a lower price due to no government fundings. The lecturer opposes this pointing the fact that government supports airline services by building air traffic towers for free, paying air traffic officers, and funding weather satelites for them to use in their weather predictions. So the government is already funding and spending big amount of revenue for airline companies.
Lastely, the article points that Rail travel is not used much by citizens and the most popular means of transportation is cars saying that the government should spend more money on maintaining and improving highways. The lecturer contradicts this by saying that the Rail system is not popular due to out of date systems and low speed. She affirms this by making examples of Japan and Europe saying that due to investments done the railroad is fast and most people in those countries use trains to travel due to this. Therefore, the government needs to invest more into Railroads to improve the service.
