Antarctica warming
There has been a debate about whether or not Antarctica was as much as 100 c warmer. In the reading the author states three theories to support its claims. However, in the listening the professor casts doubt each claims made in the reading. He believes that none of these theories is convincing.
First of all, the writer mentions that the evidence of pollen grains might prove that Antarctica 15 million years ago was warm enough to ensure plants to grow normally. This argument is challenged by the lecturer. She states pollen grains were light enough to be carried by wind to thousands of kilometres away; therefore, the pollen grains could be produced by the plants from nearby places, like, South America and New Zealand, and traveled into the Antarctica with wind of ocean water.
Secondly, the author assorts that the level of the climbing of CO2 might be caused by the confirmed major volcanic activity during the Middle Miocene, and CO2 is linked to climate warming. The professor, however, refutes this point by mentioning the fact that the recent research shows that the CO2 level was much lower than it is today. Thus, the Antarctica is million years ago might not undergo the climate warming.
Finally, the author claims that deuterium and increase rainfall might have something to do with high temperature in Antarctica. The professor casts doubt on this weak argument. According to her, different plants have various capacity of absorbing the deuterium; therefore, it is possible that certain types of plant in Antarctica might have the ability to absorb the large amount of deuterium. In this way, the amount of deuterium could indicate the increased rainfall not to mention the climate warming
