The reading and the listening are both about using a box like device to fight against desertificatation. The author of the reading believes that these devices are not effective and mentioned three reasons for support. The lecturer challengis the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that none of these reasons are convincing.
To begin with, the author suggests that the process of growing million trees would be very costly since the price of box like device is 25 dollars. In the article, it is stated that this process is not affordable by most countries that suffer from desertification. The lecturer challenges this specific argument by asserting that these devices are cost-effective because the are reusable. In other words, once the young tree is grwon, the device can be removed and use to plant other trees and it can be reused for 20 times. Therefore, It can not be considered expensive in terms of the number of trees that can be planted using one device.
Secondly, the writer argues that the local people will not be enthusiastic to take care of the devices for maintainace and installing because the grown trees will not be edible or lessen the burden on them.
However, the lecturer rebuts this by claiming that those local people can get rewarded by using some of box like devices to collect water for other plants like vegetables . Moreover, he mentions that once the young trees are grown, the branches can be a valuable source for fire wood. Consequently, the local people will be motivated to help in the installation and maintenance of these devices.
Finally, the author posits that these devices capacity to collect water is restricted to the limit that can only keep small tree alive. The article mentions that big trees can not thrive on their own in the harsh environment that could be arid for 6 months. In contrast, the lecturer cast doubt on this by explaining that the box like devices help the trees to have long roots that extend to the underground moist soil. In addition, he notes that 90% of the big trees in Sahara dessert, still surviving after the device had been removed .
