Burning mirror integrated essay
Reading and lecture talks existence of weapon called burning mirror in Roman navy. Author mention that there is no evidence to prove this story. While lecture claims doubt made in reading by giving logical explanation as follows:
First, reading states that Greeks were not intelligent to make such complex tool. Author adds making burning mirror that requires sophisticated technique to make parabola out of use large copper polished sheet was nearly impossible at that time. While, professor challenges this point asserted in reading. She claims that Greeks would had made dozens of small polished copper to form parabola. She thinks that they were expert in creating this unique shape.
Second, reading mention that this method of destroying sheep very much time consuming. Reading also sates that there is no way that Roman ship could had be static for long duration to make it effective. Lecture casts doubt on this statement made in reading. She refutes that it takes ten minutes for wood to catch fire. She says that ship was not made up of only wood, while with other sticky material called pitch which can easily burn. As s result, this weapon is very advantageous in defence.
Third, reading points out that there was no need to have another weapons as they had similar tools called flaming arrows. Reading suggests both instrument almost have same effect there was nothing extraordinary about burning mirrors. In contrast, lecture posits that burning mirror was better because flame was invisible. In addition she thinks that it is very effective if enemies cannot spot the flame and that is not possible in case of flaming arrows. This is how lecture successfully casts doubt on points made in reading.
