Essay topics:

The cane toad is a large (1.8 kg) amphibian species native to Central and South America. It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers'crops by eating harmful insects. Unfortunately, the toad multiplied rapidly, and a large cane toad population now threatens small native animals that are not pests. Several measures have been proposed to stop the spread of the cane toad in Australia.

One way to prevent the spread of the toad would be to build a national fence. A fence that blocks the advance of the toads will prevent them from moving into those parts of Australia that they have not yet colonized. This approach has been used before: a national fence was erected in the early part of the twentieth century to prevent the spread of rabbits, another animal species that was introduced in Australia from abroad and had a harmful impact on its native ecosystems. Second, the toads could be captured and destroyed by volunteers. Cane toads can easily be caught in simple traps and can even be captured by hand. Young toads and cane toad eggs are even easier to gather and destroy, since they are restricted to the water. If the Australian government were to organize a campaign among Australian citizens to join forces to destroy the toads, the collective effort might stop the toad from spreading. Third, researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations. This virus will be specially designed: although it will be able to infect a number of reptile and amphibian species, it will not harm most of the infected species; it will specifically harm only the cane toads. The virus will control the population of cane toads by preventing them from maturing and reproducing.

The author talks about how cane toads are wrecking havoc in Australia and presents three major ways that they can be controlled. The lecturer however refutes those ideas and talks about why the solution to neutralize cane toads presented by the author will actually do more damage than good.

To begin with, the author suggests to put a national fence around Australia which will prevent the toads from moving to other parts of Australia but the author contrasts this suggestion by presenting her view that this approach will not stop the toads from spreading to other parts. She explains that the cane toads live and lay eggs in rivers, so the young toads and their eggs can easily travel to another region through the water sources. She adds that it is enough for few of those toads that reach another area to multiply and destroy the ecosystem there.

Furthermore, the author suggests to start a campaign where volunteers would capture the toads or their eggs and destroy them. The lecturer agrees that this might work. The volunteers might be able to capture the toads and kill them. But there is a high risk factor where the untrained volunteers might capture and kill some rare and endangered species of toads. The cane toads are very similar to the other toads and volunters are likely to mistake the endangered toads with the cane toads.

Finally, the author talks about the idea of developing a virus that is specifically targeted to harm the cane toads in order to control their population. This virus will be able to infect other animals such as reptiles and amphibians, but will not harm them. Here the lecturer posits her view that this virus might wreck havoc on the cane toads in other ecosystem. She explains that many reptiles and other animals are transported around the world for various purposes, so these infected reptiles will also travel around the world and infect the cane toads in their natural habitat such as South America. This will destroy the population of cane toads in those regions. Hence ecosystem outside of Australia will also suffer.
