The Chevalier's memoirs.

Essay topics:

The Chevalier's memoirs.

The lecture disagrees with passage about the Chevalier's memoirs being inaccurate and not reliable. The professor provides three agruments for the same.

First, is that borrowing money in Switzerland could mean that the Chevalier was simply had to borrow money while waiting for his assets to liquidate since this procedure took some time. This contradicts the passage's assumption that the Chevalier was poor since he had to borrow money.

Second, the professor mentions that the Chevalier was known to take notes and refer to them frequently, thus even after a long time he could refer to his notes in which he daily noted down the conversations between him and Voltaire thereby producing an accurate recollection of their conversations.

Lastly, the Chevalier's jail break, in the passage, is attributed to bribing the jailers, which according to the professor cannot be correct since prisoners with better connections than the Chevalier could not get out thus deminishing the probability that he could find his way out through bribery. Another point that the professor brings up is that the prison administration had to repair the ceiling after the Chevalier got free. This suggests that the Chevalier indeed escaped the prison by making a hole in the ceiling.

In conclusion, the professor provides rationals to establish the fact that the Chevalier's memoirs do provide accurate and reliable historical source.
