discussion about historical source written by Chevaliar de Seingalt
The passage and lecturer are discussed about historical source written by Chevaliar de Seingalt whether his memoir is reliable or not. Passage holds the idea that his memoir is not valuable besides lecturer holds positive opinion, she furtherly gave specific detail on every statement that the passage holds.
First of all, in reading passage, it stated that Chevalier used to borrow money from Swiss merchant for parties and gambling that leads to conclusion he was not wealthy. However, lecturer stated that he was actually rich but some reason his borrowed money from merchant because he might be ran out cash and he is still considered as rich by the evidence of his property.
Secondly, passage doubt that he had conversation with Voltaire remember every detail after many years which is almost impossible for human to remember memories that happened such long period. Nevertheless, lecturer stated that he wrote down anything he remember and that proving that his memoir is reliable. Also, evidence was found conforming his notes and journal.
Lastly, when he was in Italy prison he escaped using piece of metal by making hole in ceiling which is doubted by the passage. They assumed that jailers were birded to free him because there was connection between some politics in Venice and Chevalier. Even thought, lecturer did not agree with assumption made by passage because of historical evidence happened after the news he escaped. Lecturer stated that, soon after the escape Venice jail rebuilt their roof which clearly giving an evidence that he really did escape from jail.
Lastly, from the beginning to the end lecturer denied every statement pointed in passage by giving specific evidence based example.
