Driverless Cars
Autonomous vehicles are going to be a huge transformation in the automobile sector. The reading passage introduces this concept of vehicles being controlled by sensors and computers without any human intervention. It is said that it is going to have a positive impact on the driving experience and the claim is supported by certain relevant points and examples. Alongside, the lecture analyzes these same points in a different angle showing some of the disadvantages which will be associated with driverless cars.
Firstly, the lecture talks about the safety of driverless vehicles. The lecturer is of the opinion that at the end of the day these autonomous cars are going to be developed by humans. Therefore, they will also be prone to error if there are bugs in a part of the software controlling the mechanisms. This raises a question on the claim made in the reading passage that the introduction of driverless cars will contribute to reducing the number of accidents causing severe fatalities and make driving a safer experience. To illustrate the risks involved, the lecturer elaborates the example given in the reading passage about a driverless car which travelled 700000 miles. He says that this particular vehicle hit another vehicle ending up in an accident which was even covered in the news. Therefore, safety is still a big question.
Secondly, the person speaks about the eco-friendly aspect of autonomous vehicles. He feels that this will not be true as with the advent of these cars, more people will begin to drive as it will not require a driving license. Along with this, even age restrictions will not come into play so even senior citizens and children will join to increase the number of vehicles on the road. Therefore, even if driverless cars are going to be fuel-efficient, the relative increase in the number of vehicles will result in an increase in pollution levels.
Finally, the passage writer believes people will get an additional amount of time to utilize for work or recreational purposes. On the other hand, the speaker says that most people enjoy driving as it is a change in their routine life. Driving your own vehicle serves as an effective distraction from the monotonous work a person does all day. Hence, he is worried that if people leave driving, they will spend these extra 30 minutes of the to and fro journey to carry out same work related tasks or entertainment activities which will just end up in wasting their time.
To summarize, the passage and lecture both talk about driverless cars in their own way. The points made in the lecture highlight some of the disadvantages of autonomous driving, raising a doubt on the pros which were discussed in the passage. Therefore, both sides of the coin need to be considered before introducing driverless cars in the market.
