The lecture and the reading passage offer three opposing views on a method of reducing hail, called "cloud seeding" in order to produce harmless rain or snow instead of hail. While, some reasons are stated in passage supporting "cloud seeding", the lecturer casts some doubts on this reasons.
First, the lecturer claims that doing experiments under lab situation and under real situation may lead to different results and it is not logical to rely only on experiments under lab circumstances. While light snow forming is observed in lab, the lecturer states that utilizing this method, may causes the lack of rain in some clouds in real situation.
Next, the lecturer mentions that, evidences from Asia are related to using this method just in urban areas. Although it is said in the reading passage that "cloud seeding" in some Asian Countries has been successfully used, the lecturer states that these positive results may not also be effective in the USA because she believes that Asian urban areas have a large amount of air pollution and this air pollution can chemically interact with silver iodide. So, using this method in unpolluted area like America may not work properly.
Finally, according to passage, however, observations from a study found that in area which this method was used there was reduced hail damage, the lecturer asserts that hail damage reduction was not specifically occurred in that special area and this reduction occurred in many areas around the tested area. Thus, hail damage decrease can be due to some natural variations.
