At the end of the Triassic period 200 million years ago, there was a mass-extinction event that caused the extinction of more than half of all living species. It was this extinction event that allowed dinosaurs to become the dominant species for the next

The lecturer disputes the author's suggested explanations of the causes of the massive extinction at the end of the Triassic period. She provides three concrete reasons to cast doubt the author's claims.

First, according to the text the reason for the massive extinction is the decline in sea water level. However, the lecturer find this idea debatable. She asserts that indeed, this decline in water level does not cause such a massive extinction because animals living in shallow water are able to adapt to this change over time.

Second, the lecturer contradicts the fallacy of the passage that the release of sulfur dioxide into the air causes a significant decline in air temperature. She contends that theoretically speaking this may happen if the decline took place for an extended period of time. However, during the Triassic period, the rain washed away all the sulfuric oxide, thus, all the chemicals were cleared out.

Finally, the author argues that an asteroid which struck the earth may have cause this problem. Again, the lecturer disputes this points. He contends that the only crater found on the surface of the earth is dated 12 millions years before the Triassic period, which make this explanation as an invalid one
