Essay topics: TPO-42 - Integrated Writing Task

In this set materials, the reading passage state that humans prefer to use glass for designing a building, but birds cannot recognize the glass and collapse with it; therefore, the reading provides tree solutions for this problem. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading points by providing different reasons (and examples).

First of all, the reading passage indicates that people can use one-way glasses. The people who live in the building can see out but the birds cannot see indoor. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that one-way glasses work as the same as a mirror. If this glass reflects the sky or trees, the birds do not recognise and distinguish this image. Therefore, they crash with the glass and become injured.

Second, the reading argues that individuals use some colourful lines on the glasses, for the birds can distinguish the glass; conversely, what the speaker believes is different. He points that the birds think that this line is open holes ; thus, they try to fly to them. He also adds that if the designer makes the opening areas very small that bird could not fly through them, the light cannot get in from windows, so the rooms become dark.

Finally, according to the reading, a magnetic field is created around the building, and it helps to birds for finding direction. However, the professor claims that birds only use a magnetic field for finding ways when they want to travel long distance. For example, they use a magnetic field when they want to migrate from a cold place to a warmer place. But, for short distance such as travelling across the city, they do not use a magnetic field for finding their ways. In this situation, they use the sun or their eye's sight for finding their path.
