Glass is a favored building material
The author cites three resons to support the view point that three solutions can be used to prevent birds from getting injured. Nevertheless, the lecturer argues that these three soultions are not effective.
Firstly, the author argues that replacing regular class with one-way glass is useful as birds can not see through a window, making them understand that there is a solid barrier and will nor fly through it. However, the lecturer offers an opposite stand that birds will still fly into it. To be more specific, one-way class reflects real things in the sky like a mirror, making birds aware of that it is the real sky and fly into it.
Secondly, the author contents that painting colortful lines or other designs on regular window glass can prevent birds from getting injured and people inside still can see through the openings where there is no paint. On the contrary, the speaker refutes this solution that it will make people inside feel too dark. In order to prohibit birds from flying through the window, the empty space has to be made very small unless birds will regard it as holes and fly through it. In this way, people inside will feel too dark and can not see outside.
Thirdly, the author says that using artificial magnetic field will lead birds away from buildings, given the fact that birds rely on sensing magnetic field to navigate in the right direction. Nonetheless, this view is also counteracted by the lecturer that it does not work well. Although birds rely on magnetic field to navigate, this ability is only used in long distance. When birds fly in short distance, they depend more on eyes or the bright of light, making the usage of artificial magnetic field ineffective. Eventually, birds will still fly through the window.
