The passage begins by arguing that whales are intelligent enough to use stars to guide their orientation. Nevertheless, the lecture counters this, pointing out that there is no solid evidence about the connection between intelligent and that specific ability. A kind of bird which has brain on average size, could navigate their travel with stars. That is to say, possibly there are no directly dependence between the cognitive level and the ability to use stars to lead their movement. Therefore, the assertion of the passage does not seem reasoning.
Furthermore, the passage assumes that the fact that whales migrate in straight lines support the statement, since external objects are required as reference for animals to move as such. The lecture, however, suggests this may not be merited by the evidence. A specific organism was found in whales' mind, which has ability to measure the magnetic field of the Earth. Therefore, whales could wield this inborn ability to perform the straight movement, without the need for external objects. The passage cannot bolster the recommendation without ruling out the refutation.
Last but not the least important, even if the evidence turns out to support the passage that spy-hopping, a rare behavior found in whales, could be an evidence that whales look upward to find stars, one critical fact is being left out of consideration. The lecture points out the passage neglects the truth that other animals which do not migrate also have the same behavior. Moreover, the spy-hopping behavior typically happens in day, when the stars could not be easily seen. The passage must explain more persuasively to reach the cited conclusion.
