Integrated task suggested in TPO21
In this set of material the topic of benefits, cost, and problems of genetically modification of organisms is discussed—in particular trees. The lecturer relates to this topic by adding the information about problems and cost of genetically modified trees.
In the lecture, professor claims that although these trees are resistant to a particular condition, it does not guarantee their survival. According to her, in the process of modification, all structures designed for other conditions also modify; therefore, such tress cannot tolerate all conditions they lie in. However, this statement is not supported by what is written in the text because on the basis of pest-resistant species native to Hawaii proved that genetically modified papaya-trees has largely put an end to the ringspot problem.
Moreover, the professor explains a hidden cost exist through growing such modified trees on which growing them does not worth. She elaborates this notion by mentioning that each company has to pay sums of money to original company related to growing seeds. Nevertheless, the reading do not accept this idea since according to that such trees promise to bring a number of benefits like faster growing and greater yields of food.
Finally, the lecturer say that Genetically modified trees are crowing out natural trees; they grow more aggressively but the tout compete for resources; however, the reading conclude that such trees can prevent overexploitation of wild trees since “they can satisfy the demand for wood in many those areas and save endangered native trees”
