Integrated Writing Task In the United States, it had been common practice since the late 1960s no to suppress natural forest fires. The “let it burn” policy assumed that forest fire would burn themselves out quickly, without causing much dama
The article states that replace ‘let it burn policy’ with a policy of extinguishing the fire as soon as they appeared by surmising the fire incident of Yellowstone, the famous national park in the US. The author has provided three reasons to support his view. However, the professor casts doubt on what is presented in the article and refutes each of the reasons given by the author.
First, the article claims that because of this policy fire caused tremendous damage to the park’s trees and other vegetation. However, Professor refutes this point by saying vegetation scorched colonization by a few plants. Because of fire, there was an increase in vegetation more small plants grew as they needed open space to grow as fire destroyed the big trees. Moreover, new seeds germinate due to the high heat produced which is needed for germination.
Second, the article posits park wildlife was destroyed in a great way and eventually food chain destroyed. However, the professor opposes by saying as new opportunities for small plants to grow. The ideal habitat is been made for small animals like rabbits and hares. Results of this the predators depended on this animal also increased and food chain became more stable.
Third, the reading says that the fire compromises the value of the park as a tourist attraction and reduced the local economy. However, the professor opposes this point by explaining that it reduces the tourist attraction if the fire occurs every year. This fire was fair and usual due to a combination of low rain, dry undergrowth, and unusual harsh winds. This combination is not possible every year and since 1988 no such fire has occurred. However, she adds that the visitor came each year after the incident and there is no such reduction in tourists.
By giving above mentioned points professor cast doubts on the claim mentioned in the article.
