One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die. Some people suggest that t

The reading and the lecture are both about Turtle Excluder Devices. The author of the reading provides three possible benefits of TEDs. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that the author's explanations are faulty.

To begin with, the author argues that TEDs are useful since they prevent animals larger than 10 centimeters from getting caught inside the nets. In the article, it is mentioned that a clear pathway is provided for larger animals to escape and hence, only the smaller animals like shrimp are caught in the nets. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He is of the opinion that many mid-sized and smaller turtles get caught inside the nets, since they are less than 10 centimeters in size. Moreover, he also mentions that many lucky shrimps also end up escaping the nets and thereby, reducing the number of shrimps caught, which results in a loss to the owners.

Secondly, the writer states that a "Shrimp-Turtle Law" was passed, which requires all shrimping boats to have TEDs installed on their boats. The article also mentions that there are specific organizations to monitor whether the shrimping boats are in compliance with the passed law. The lecturer, however, rebuts this claim by mentioning that many shrimping boats remove the TEDs in the middle of the sea in order to increase their profits. Furthermore, the lecturer also says that it is difficult to monitor the boats which are very far from the coast, and it is virtually impossible for the authorities to enforce the law in such extreme conditions.

Finally, the author posits that the US and some European countries allow import of shrimp products only from TED certified ships. In contrast, the lecturer argues that many shrimping businesses operate using fake certificates. Since, the certificates are international and issued by various countries, it is very difficult for the authorities to distinguish the fake certificates from the original ones. Thus, various shrimping businesses operate using fake documents and do not comply with the shrimping laws.
