Online graduate degree programs are being offered worldwide. In many respects, the programs are like the same degree programs available in a traditional campus environment, but in several key aspects, they are very different.
The reading passage discusses three main disadvantages for online graduate degrees. However, the speaker in the lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He believes that the drawbacks mentioned in the excerpt are questionable.
First of all, the lecturer holds that the one-on-one time with the professor is up to the student. While a student in a regular schedule classes connects with the professor through face-to-face interaction, a student who wants to contact a professor in an online course can use e-mail, chat, or even telephone conference occasionally. This refutes the idea in the article that students would not have the opportunity to communicate with the professor in an online degree and hence professors would not get to know students.
Second, the lecturer challenges the point made in the article that with regard to traditional campus education, online degrees are inferior in quality and level of difficulty. He further points out that both online degrees and traditional classroom studying from the same institute must meet the same standards in order to be accredited. In addition, online courses could be even more difficult as they need more self-discipline, more personal time management and knowledge of technology.
Finally, the listening indicates that Although some online courses are not accredited and not worth the time, it's not true that top schools do not offer online degree options. The lecturer states that many Ivy league schools provide the chance to complete the entire degree online while few others require a one-term residency on campus. Plus, other high-ranking universities have a variety of degrees between conventional campus programs and internet-based ones.
