Organic food

Essay topics:

Organic food

The reading and the lecture are both about the benefits of organic foods such as fruits and vegetables. According to the reading passage, there are several benefits in the consumption of organic foods, which eventually may cause worthwhile impact on human health. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the article. She suggests that organic farming is less beneficial than it seems at a glance.
First of all, many organic farmers use the chemicals, which are known as the unofficial pesticides. The evidence buttresses the possible negative impact as to when the organic food is consumed by people. In addition, the pesticides held in the organic food are harmful to the health and may lead to the development of Parkinson disease. However, the author of the reading refers to the research, which proved that the consumption of artificial additives found in non-organic food harms children. In addition, he states that since organic food does not include pesticides, people do not have to worry about side effects.
Furthermore, the development of organic farming may lead to more serious environmental problems, than using pesticides, that at the end become waste, polluting land and water. Provided organic farms need much more land to grow the same amount of crops, than large corporations, thus the large amount of forests should be cut in order to provide enough space for organic farming. However, the author of the reading contends that the lack of usage of chemicals will lead to reduced amount of pollutants.
Additionally, the lecturer puts forth the idea that the production of organic food does not actually favor small farms as large corporations cultivate such crops. Since 1982, when it became far-famed to grow organic foods, large corporations entered the market by starting to produce organic vegetables and fruits, but they sell the crops under the sister companies’ labels. This counters the point made in the article, according to which organic food benefits the small farms.
All in all, the evidence referred to by the lecturer challenges the idea that the organic farming is as beneficial, as the author states.
