The lecture and the reading are both about factors of dwindiling sea otters population which inhabit along the western coastal area of North America. The author of the reading believes that decrease in number of the sea creatures is related to environmental matters. The lecturer casts doubt on claims made by the author. She considers predation as a main factor.
The author argues that water pollution causes death of otters. The article mentions that chemical substances which have been emitted to the water samples lead to an outbreak of fatal infections. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She asserts absence of dead sea otters onshore means that any disease did not threaten them. Additionally, predators eat them as a whole, therefore, the sea animals do not wash up the coast.
The writer suggests that along the Alaskan coast declined critters are not only sea otters, but also seals as well as sea lions. According to the article if there is correlation between predation and decline, predators will be only orcas. Having said that orcas hunt primarily larger prey, especially other types of whales. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning human hunters. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that since larger sea animals were killed by people, the orcas started eating small ones.
Finally, the author posits that level of death differs from one area to another. Moreover, it is stated in the passage that by virtue of variation in concentration of polluted water, in some places of the coast disappearence of sea otters was greater than others. In contrast, the lecturer feels that it depends on presence of orcas in the location. She points out that in the areas where orca can live decline was observed much more than in shallow and rocky places.
