The reading and the lecture are both about how the existing population on the Easter Island flourished. The author of the reading believes that the population on the Easter Island were destroyed by foreign invaders. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. He thinks that the destruction was not casued by the invaders but it was caused by thedifferences between communities living in the Easter Island in hope of food, resources, pride and dominance.
First of all, the author claims that the nature was devasted by the foreign incursions. He believes that all the palm trees where removed by the invaders in the island. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the nature was destroyed by the people of Easter Island.Furtheremore, he points out the different communities living on the Island created huge stone statues and to design the statues the require wooden logs. Hence, they were the result of destruction of trees on the Island.
Secondly, the author states that spear tips were used by invaders to attack on the commmunities living in the Island. This point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that the Islanders created these spear tips to attack each other as there were differences between the communities living on the Island. The fought with themselves in for food, power and other resources.
Thirdly, the author claims that the appearnce of new religion created more support and it was determined by the birdman statues. The lecturer, on the other hand, states the communities living on the Island adopted new methods of living as they were running out of resources. He puts forth the idea that the existing communities created new methos of living and were driven by the new environment.
