ReadingThe cane toad is a large 1 8 kg amphibian species native to Central and South America It was deliberately introduced to Australia in 1935 with the expectation that it would protect farmers crops by eating harmful insects Unfortunately the t

The lecturer refutes the arguments of the reading passage about how to control the population of the cane toad. The reading passage suggests three approaches to handle the population of the cane toad. However, the lecturer thinks each of those approaches will be unsuccessful and cause unexpected damage.
First, the reading passage proposes to build a national fence to prevent cane toads from spreading. However, the lecturer points out that it will not be effective because they can be found in rivers and streams. Their eggs can be carried through water easily and young cane toad can establish a new ecosystem beyond the fence. This contradicts what the reading passage suggests.
Second, the reading passage mentions that volunteers can contribute to decreasing the number of cane toads because cane toads can be easily caught using simple traps and by hands. However, the lecturer points out untrained volunteers may also destroy the native frogs if the government asks for volunteers’ help on catching the cane toads because it is not easy to tell cane toads and native frogs especially when they are young. The lecturer considers that volunteers would have a rather bad impact on the ecosystem.
Furthermore, the reading passage suggests using the virus which can prevent them from maturing and reproducing. However, the lecturer points out that viruses may cause a disaster in the areas where cane toads are national species even if the virus was initially used in Australia. If infected reptile and amphibian species are transported from Australia to other areas by researchers or pet collectors, the virus can be spread in other areas. If cane toads in the original habitat get infected by the virus, they will cause a terrible impact on the whole ecosystem because cane tods play an important role as one of the ecosystems there.
