The passage is about the consequences of declination in the number of people reading literature and how it is affecting the culture in general. However the professor does not agree with the reasoning presented in the text. She casts doubts on each of the theory presented in the reading.
First of all, the text states that in comparison to literature, no other form of book provides same level of intellectual stimulation. In contrast, the professor argues that the books on science and history are as intellectually stimulating as the literature. The books on above mentioned topics also helps people to exercise their imagination in same way as the literature.
Secondly, the passage posits that rather than reading literature people are diverting their time to trivial form of entertainment like television and music videos which has lowered the level of culture in the society. However, the professor contends that declination in number of people reading any kind of books have not resulted in any form of depreciation in the culture. Moreover, she points out that movies and music are alternate medium of expression available nowadays for people to cater to the contemporary needs of the society.
Finally, the text asserts that readers are to be blamed for decreasing trend of reading less literature. Meanwhile, the professor notes that audience is not solely responsible for the aforementioned trend. She elaborates on this by saying that most of the times modern literature is very hard to understand. So, blaming the readers for not being interested in something they do not understand is not justified.
