The reading and the lecture are both about people nowadays read less literature. The author of the reading feels that it's a shame that fewer people treat literature seriously in the present in comparison in the past, and the author also thinks what literature can bring to people will not being replaced by other forms of entertainment as television or web pages, which grab people's eyes most of the days. The lecture challenges the claims made by the author. The speaker of the lecture is of the opinion that reading less literature cannot be said to be a one hundred percent negative situation, also the reader is definitely not the only one to blame
To begin with, the author argues that there's nothing serve as the perfect intellectual stimulation as literature does. The article mentions that literature does help a lot with people's development on imagination, the ability of empathy, and being capable of realizing the meaning of various form of words. The specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that literature is not the only types of reading materials that can be seen as intellectual; science, political science, history and many more other types of books can also be good.
Secondly, the author states that other forms of media like webpages or television are something distracting people from focusing on literature; hence making people miss out the benefits they used to take from literature. The lecturer rebuts it by mentioning that the literature can't be said to be the best, there is always non-literary medium better than literature. She elaborates this by bringing up the point that music and movie have their own style of expression, and they may speak more that word-based literature.
Finally, the author posits that people read less nowadays causes the publishers to invest less in good writers, which in term result in fewer good written literature. As a result, the amount of audience and literature decrease from time to time as the vicious cycle keeps running. In contrast, the lecturer strongly opposes this argument by stating that the modern literature is kinda difficult for reader to understand, the writer themselves don't change much for the audience so it's not the readers to be blame for this.
