In this set of materials, the reading passage states three main doubts about the Rembrandts painting known as 'Portrait of an elderly woman in a white bonnet'. He was the most famous of the seventeenth-century Dutch painters. However, the professor refutes all the doubts made in the article, and his reasons are as follows.
To start with, the passage points out about doubts about painting that the lady wearing white linen cap that servants wore and the luxurious fur collar that no servant could afford. Nevertheless, the lecturer denis this doubt as she explains that fur colour was painted over the original colour after 100 years after the painting was made, to make it look fresh.
Secondly, the reading contends that Rembrandt was master of painting light and shadow but in that particular painting there is an illumination of light from below and dark fur collar that would absorb the light. Nevertheless, the professor argues that when fur was painted with colour over the original fur colour, the face had appeared to be in partial shadow.
Last, the article states that back of the painting was made on several pieces of wood glued together. But it has been said that Rembrandt often paints on single wood panels. Conversely, the professor defends this doubt by providing a piece of information done by a researcher on the wood of that painting. Extra pieces were added to the back of painting during the fur colouring process. She also makes it clear by saying that the painting was made on the same wood panel used by Rembrandt to make another painting.
In sum, the professor cast a reasonable solution on the doubts made by people about the painting by Rembrandt.
