The author in the reading passage suggests three ways to decrease the salinity of Salton Sea, while the professor in the lecture refutes all of them by saying that all three solutions are unrealistic.
First of all, in the reading passage, the author argues that the salt in the lake can be directly removed by evaporation of water inside, which leave the salt behind during this process. However, the professor disproves this solution because it may cause serious problem, such as health risks for human. To be more specific, when the water evaporating, the left behind solid not just include salt, but also other chemicals like Selenium, which may be toxic when they go into the air with wind. Then, the people breath in the toxic air would result health problems.
Second, although it may be effective to dilute the salt level in the lake by inducing lower salinity ocean water by using pipelines or canals, the professor claims that local government do not have much free resource to construct the pipelines. Because distance of the ocean and this lake is ten kilometers away, thus the construction fee of that long pipelines would be too expensive for local government to pay.
Finally, according to the reading, the author provides another solution to control the lake's salinity. The author points out constructing walls to divide the lake into several sections may help. Nevertheless, the professor disagrees this way by pointing out that this method won't work very long because of the intense geological activities like earthquakes in this area. Once the earthquake happens, the wall will collapse and the higher salinity water in the small section will go back to main section. Thus, the salinity level of this lake becomes the same in different sections.
To sum up, the professor indicates the three possible solutions for decreasing the salinity level of Salton Sea are impractical.
