So in this way, they can produce food crops as well as plants recycling the water. Therefore, they would not face food and water problem. Besides, all plants absorb CO2 and emit oxygen, so they would have fresh air to breathe.
Furthermore, according to the reading passage, staying for a period of two years in zero-gravity conditions poses some severe physical damage to the astronauts' bodies. On the other hand, the professor points out that many astronauts currently spend months in space stations under zero gravity. They use some techniques to keep their body in healthy condition; for example, they do regular exercises and consume vitamins and calcium.
Finally, the writer believes that being exposed to solar radiation for a long time is too harmful to astronauts, and a protective shield cannot be added to the space vehicles since it would add too much weight to the ship. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this assertion by contending that solar radiations are not always at a dangerous level. Spaceships can be equipped with devices to monitor solar radiation. Also, only a part of the spaceship can be shielded so its weight would not exceed the allowable limit. Whenever the device shows a dangerous level of solar radiation, the astronauts can reside in the protected area.
To sum up, both the lecturer and the author hold conflicting views on the difficulties with the journey to Mars.
