Some critics contend that keeping animals in zoos is inhumane and must be changed. They believe that zoos are unnatural and provide no real benefit to society besides providing entertainment at the expense of the animals involved. The truth is that zoos are essential to a modern culture that places value in animal life.
Animals are treated well in zoos. In fact, the most passionate animal lovers are usually the animal keepers found in zoos. They ensure that the animals maintain the same level of psychological “happiness” as their wild counterparts. They, along with the zoo itself, help animals live longer, feed better, and suffer from fewer diseases; These animals are allowed to exist without the fear of predation or famine because of zoos.
Additionally, zoos are no longer seen as or marketed as forms of entertainment, but as education. Zoos work to inform the public about exhibited animals, wildlife in general, and the important need to preserve our Earth. The emphasis on conservation and education is an important one. Visitors are taught about issues and animals that they would never have direct experience with otherwise. Thus, zoos provide a crucial tool to direct the public towards more humane ways to look at the world.
Finally, zoos serve the vital function of helping to protect and preserve endangered species. For example, the Golden Lion Tamarins are an endangered species native to Brazil. In the early part of the 1970s, only around 200 of these small monkeys existed. It was only through the coordinated actions of several zoos and the Brazilian government that these animals were saved from extinction. Today, as a result of these efforts, you can find about 1,500 living in the wild.

Some critics believe that the zoo must be changed as it is inhuman to animals. It provide no real benefit to society besides providing entertainment at the expense of the animals involved but the article states that zoos are essential to modern culture and provides a great value to the animals life in many ways. He provides three reasons to support his opinion. On the other hand, the lecturer totally refutes the idea pitched by the author and believes that zoo is in no way provide any benefit to the animals. He has provided examples to counter every reason given by the author.
First, the author believes that the animals are treated very well inside the zoos and usually passionate animal lovers are found inside them. The lecturer refuses the author opinion saying the animals are not treated with utmost care inside the zoo. He describes about the recent incident in one of the zoo where accidental rat poison exposure to the two red pandas leads to their death. Although, the life of these pandas could have been saved by the safety manger but they were not found anywhere near the crime scene. This is just one of many incidents which shows the lack of care given to animals in the zoo.
Second, the author states that the zoos are seen as a source of education rather than a place for entertainment. The professor refutes the author’s statement as most of the animals present inside the zoo are kept to attract more visitors instead of the animals which will increase the information level of people. This not only encourages the wrong idea of using animals for own purpose but also develops a sense of using animals for personal gain. If the animals of different and rare type are shown, they are put in very artificial and misleading way to the visitors. Thus, it doesn’t adds up as a source of education.
Third, in the authors view zoos are a brilliant way to provide shelter in order to protect endangered and distinct species. The lecturer refutes the idea saying that the example of Golden Lion Tamarins mentioned by the author is the situation of one out of hundred zoos. If we look at the overall success rate of inhabiting endangered species, it is poor. In most of the zoos, these species when kept with each other tend to interbreed within themselves leading to high rate of birth defects. Thus, it has proved to be of no advantage for the endangered species.
In conclusion, the lecturer states that the amount of advantages provided by the zoo are very less in comparison to the harm in brings to the society. It spreads a wrong information about using animals for personal profit in the society. Thus, the professor really refutes the idea of promoting more zoos in the country.
