Steller's sea cow
Both reading and the lecture discuss the reasons for the extinction of Steller's sea cow. In this set of materials, the author strongly postulates that in 1768 the Steller's sea cow became extinct around Bering Island off the coast of Siberia and mentions three theories about its disappearance. The professor, on the other hand, states that the theories are wrong and gainsays each of them.
First and foremost, the author claims that the sea cow may have vanished because the inhabitants of Siberia killed the animal to survive i.e. food. However, the speaker explains that if this is true, only one sea cow would have been enough for a month's supply of people's bread. Besides, he states the residents could not have been dependent only on sea cows since the number of sea cows was limited in Siberia.
Secondly, the article mentions that the Steller's sea cow no longer exists because of the reduction in kelp( a kind of sea plant) that was the main source of food for the species. On the contrary, the professor does not support this theory because he believes that if the animals depended on sea plants, along with sea cows, other sea animals, for instance, whales, would also have become extinct. As this is not what happened, it can be concluded that the kelps didn't stop growing.
Lastly, the excerpt posits that the sea cow could have been eliminated in 1976 since they were being haunted by a special kind of weapons used by European fur traders who entered Bering Island in 1741. Conversely, the professor indicates that the animals were long gone 100 years ago even before the fur traders came to Island. He further points out that the animals became extinct due to an unknown reason which casts doubt on this hypothesis of the third reason for extinction.
